I can't emphasize enough how important additional testing is. It can quickly pinpoint the root causes of many issues, saving valuable time. Testing ranges from hormone assessments, thyroid checks (including antibodies), nutrient deficiency screening (esp iron, vitamin D, B12, and folate), fasting insulin and glucose (prediabetes screening), AMH (for egg quality), homocysteine (for inflammation and genetic snips), as well as anymore tests indiacated for your unique health state. Early detection and intervention can pave the way for a much smoother, healthier, and happier pregnancy and postpartum.

Quality:
Equally important is choosing high-quality, uncontaminated supplements that are rigorously tested, and presented in a form that is bioavailable. A 2018 research paper revealed that almost all of our commonly available prenatal supplements were contaminated with heavy metals and almost half of them had lead higher than the allowable limit. One containing more than 8 times the allowable level of lead. They concluded that taking these supplements over many months may contribute to a significant heavy metal burden (read it here). This is absolutely alarming and stresses the importance of only putting good quality supplements, free of heavy metals, in your body.
Nutrients:
The physiological demands of pregnancy as well as breastfeeding mean certain nutrients must be supplemented, as dietary intake alone can't meet these increased needs. Nutrients such as glycine, choline, B6, and folate are very important as are vitamin D, iron, magnesium, calcium, and omega 3 fatty acids. It is crucial to choose the right forms of these supplements. For instance, magnesium citrate is poorly absorbed and can act as a laxative with minimal physiological benefits it was intended for. Similarly, some forms of iron are much less constipating than others. For folate and B12, a significant portion of the population requires these nutrients in a methylated form and taking too much folic acid can have negative effects. Dose and timing are very important as well. Too much can cause inflammation and too little may have no effect at all. Some minerals need to be separated as they block each others absorption (iron and calcium for example), and some nutrients are better taken in the morning while others are better at night.
It is essential to ensure your nutrient stores are high and that your digestive system is functioning optimally. As a naturopath, I can guide you in selecting supplements that support a healthy pregnancy.
